In earth terms, the impact crater caused by a meteorite 40km outside Pretoria is considered a fairly recent impact. The site, known as the Tswaing Crater, has been dated to 220000 years, at the time of the 2nd most recent glacial period, and the meteorite was estimated to have weighed 300000 tonnes. This is small by comparison to the sites at Vredefort Dome and the Sudbury Basin, however, it landed with such force that no trace has been found of the meteorite material. The impact was likened to that of the first hydrogen bomb detonated by the Americans in the Eniwetok Atoll in 1952.
