The mighty Tugela River, the largest river in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, begins its journey down to the Indian Ocean from its source high up on the Drakensberg Mountain range escarpment, and when the river reaches the 5km wide Amphitheatre, it cascades down the sheer basalt cliffs for a total distance of 948m. This cascade is known as the Tugela Falls and but for the fact that it is tiered, would be classified as the world’s longest waterfall.
The water above the falls does not congregate into a fast flowing funnel, instead it pours over the ledge in a somewhat wispy fashion, however, during the rainy season it’s a spectacular sight seen from afar. Approaching from the Tugela Gorge, one is rewarded with an interrupted view of the falls which is bounded by thick indigenous forest and protea savannah.
