Then, after the first spring rains, the fields are transformed into a mass of colour, so vivid that it’s hard to image how this assortment of plants could so quickly appear. The season is short, lasting only 2 months and the quantities and diversities of flower depend on the amount of rain experienced in the region.

The West Coast is largely undeveloped and the route spans from Darling in the south to Vredendal in the north, and through a handful of small towns in the Western Cape Province. Accommodations in the towns are booked well in advance and farmers open up their homes to provide extra rooms and hearty meals for travellers.
