We recently visited three different Western Cape stays with Afristay in search of cosy winter spots ( because let’s all be honest-Spring is still exceptionally cold in this tip of Africa, wonderful places to visit as a family and a romantic escapes. There were three places we loved…
For Couples…
Kagga Kamma, Cedarberg
The starry nights, the blissful silence and the endless low bushveld all lend itself to the perfect romantic stay. Cold morning and nights best for snuggling and warm days for a bit of exploration, 4×4 trails or quad biking. We only realised just how wonderful this would be for couples because we took our two kids both under the age of three. There is not much for young kids to do, so best leave them at home and come enjoy the quiet. We stayed in a hut suite which can accommodate families with a sleeper couch in the room whilst the cave suites are set aside for ‘just you two’. With nothing else in sight, the cave suites appear to be build into the rock formations and stairs lead up to the rock tops for great views. The pool was closed at the time, but you can choose to have a outdoor spa treatment atop the rocks, do nature drives, quad bike rides or a 4×4 trail.
For Families…
Thali Thali, West Coast
This was a great choice of a place to visit with young kids. We stayed in a farm cottage right opposite the playground and a swimming pool ( for those hot west coast months). We visited in winter so the indoor fireplace, electric blankets, and wall heaters all really came in handy. There are numerous walking trails and game drives to spot animals ( other then the Big Five) which our toddler really loved. We braaied outside our cottage as the sun set and enjoyed breakfast in the restaurant with a view over the reserve. The West Coast is also the perfect base to try out kayaking, sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, surfing and more in Langebaan, Kraalbaai, Yzerfontein and Elandsbaai as a family.
For couples and families…
Bergsicht, Tulbagh
This has got to be one of our favorite stays in a long time. Think wood-fired hot tub, rustic-chic cottage overlooking the farmlands, morning coffee with mountain views and orchard walks. This truly is an ‘escape it all’ spot with cottages for couples only and ones big enough for families. Bergsicht has become very popular and gets booked up awhile in advance so find a weekend when you know you’ll need a break, and fancy dipping in an outdoor hot tub and book your stay. The cosy indoor fireplace, modern meets farmstyle decor and warm water with a view will be enough to persuade you and ensure you never want to leave.
