Meijer's Rust is a working farm, specialising in Regnerative farming practices, offering a wide variety of accommodations within the heart of the stunning Meiringspoort, just outside the beautiful village of De Rust.

You are welcome to enjoy camping and hiking high in the Swartberg Mountains surrounded by fynbos and waterfalls. Try a farm stay in our historic stone house perfect for romantic getaways or perhaps merely savour the Karoo in one of our superb self-catering chalets.

In Room Facilities:

We welcome you to stay at Meijer's Rust and experience our hospitality. We offer a variety of accommodations, from camping under the stars to luxury chalets. You can stay the night or take your time exploring this beautiful area.

Area Information:

We are located 4 km north of De Rust along the N12 Garden Route, only 40 minutes east of Oudtshoorn, 76km from Prince Albert and 84km from the national airport in George in the magnificent Western Cape of South Africa.

Property Facilities:

We invite you to enjoy our varied activities. You will find night skies that are an astronomer’s dream, an abundant bird life and numerous walking trails taking you wherever your sense of adventure may lead. In addition to being an active farm where children can return to nature, we are also the perfect gateway to many of the other fantastic attractions located within the region.
* Hiking Trails:
Our hiking trails start in Meiringspoort and take you to the top of the Swartberg Mountain with 360º views that will take your breath away. They can lead to natural, ancient waterfalls, pools and rare San rock art.
* Mountain Bike Trails:
Mountain bike trails have an elevation level of 500m and are only recommended for the seriously fit. Check with us before you attempt these and we will provide you with the proper documentation and maps.
* Bird Life:
There are over 180 species of birds recorded on the farm. To make the most of your visit we can advise you on the best trails. Attached is a checklist that you can print to use to determine which birds you have seen.

Attractions:

* Meiringspoort:
Soaring cliff walls with spectacular rock formations line the 25 km tarred road which winds along the floor of the gorge, crossing the Groot River 25 times. Take a walk up to the impressive waterfall, well hidden in the deep ravine, and visited in 1925 by the then Prince of Wales. The water drops some 60m into a deep pool. Legend has it that a mermaid hides here, but even if you don't see her, you can still enjoy the beauty of this magical spot.

* Herrie Se Klip:
Herrie se Klip, which you will find in Meiringspoort, was declared a National Monument on August 3, 1971. This famous spot where the Herrie Stone can be seen was C J Langenhoven’s , (the well known writer and attorney) favourite place to relax and write his ever popular books. The name Herrie was chiselled by him as a monument to the imaginary elephant from his story “Herrie op die Tremspoor” (Harry on the Tram Line). Langenhoven wrote South Africa’s first National Anthem (part of which is included in the present anthem). His famous comment about Meiringspoort, is: "In each bend you will find a drift and at each drift a bend."

* Cango Caves:
The Cango Caves lie 30 kilometres outside Outshoorn. They contain some of the biggest stalagmite formations in the world, set in Precambrian times. They are recognised as one of South Africa’s greatest tourist attractions.

Very recommendable for a relaxed weekend or short holiday.
Premises are very clean and well equipped. Beautiful area to walk or mountain bike in the immediate vicinity of the Meiringspoort.
Even if you don't make use of the braai facilties the option of dining in one of the restaurants nearby in De Rust are easy options.
The only negative would be the noise from the trucks and cars at night, especially when you stay in chalet one or two.

What an amazing experience.

When we arrived we bumped into oom Barry. He asked us where we wanted to camp and obviously our answer was "as far from other people as possible"

He directed us up the mountain and said we can wild camp anywhere we like. We explored the off road "tweespoor" route and decided to camp next to a dam,

Seeing that it was getting late and there was some wind foretasted. We levelled our SUV on some rocks, pitched the rooftop tent and camped right there on the dam wall. The sunset was beautiful but not nearly as beautiful as the peace and tranquillity of a campfire burning under the stars and no one else in sight.

We were glad we decided on the spot next to the dam and not higher up the mountain because the wind picked up quite badly at around 3am but then died down as quick as it started at 5am.

We had a restful sleep, packed up and cleaned the site before we explored the farm even further.

Seeing that we didn't have enough time to explore even further and walk some of the many hiking trails, we are determined to be back soon.

The farm is beautiful and the mountain surroundings are lush and green, the most beautiful I've seen in years. We WILL be back....shortly.

Easy to find between Meiringspoort Waterfall and DeRust. Comfortable and modern styled cottage. Air conditioning was a welcome plus in the summer heat.

We have stayed at many guest farms over the years, and Meijers Rust will always be remembered as one of the best - beautiful surroundings, top of the range facilities, comfortable bed, Vivien is a delight. Highly recommended.

Very clean and neat, host very friendly and helpful.
The cottage is however awkwardly laid out, with only tiny food preparation area,and scant braai facility (small portable braai placed at a distance from stoep)...strangely, there is a well equipped but unnecessarily huge bathroom.!

We had an absolutely amazing stay. Traveled extensively and found this place to be near the top of our list. Our host was gracious and accommodating.The stone house exudes the warmth and simplicity of yesteryear. Relaxing and refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of the city.. Will definitely go back again.

Good for the soul! Remote and rustic cottage with only the cows and 4 Eland as neighbours. Very quiet and relaxing. Wonderful stars above with no other lights to compete with them.
All the amenities you need - nice hot shower and bathtub under the stars. Well stocked "kitchen" and a huge braai.

The Karoo is a beautiful place. We visited THE TRAVELING TORTOISE for a weekend. We were welcomed by the owner, Jeff, who took us to our chalet. The chalet is very neat. Jeff showed us around and light our wood-fired hot tub.
I will recommend this trip for young and old. Our kids enjoyed the freedom of roaming around and the 'older' enjoyed the nature and quite.
