Nestled at the foot of the Touwsberg, on the banks of the Touws River, lies Wolverfontein Farm. This farm, just off the present day Route 62, was established in 1890 with the building of Moreson Manor. This “Volstruis Paleis”, built at the height of the Ostrich Feather boom, and now a private residence, is your reception to the two accommodation options on offer – Zara Cottage and D’Waenhuis. Two fully equipped, self catering farm cottages, are beautifully restored and renovated historical buildings. Staying at Wolverfontein offers a unique and authentic experience.
Each cottage has an private, exclusive use plunge pool and braai area. Eskom power with solar backup to run the lights, a plug point and wifi during loadshedding. Gas stove and oven with stove top kettle for that cup of tea or coffee during loadshedding.
D’Waenhuis is a restored farm building dating to the late 1800’s. Today it’s a self catering retreat for romantic couples, with the added option of two sleeper couches should you need them for the kids.
D’Waenhuis has high Oregon ceilings and is packed with plenty of character and retro delights. The lounge area with indoor fireplace is most spacious, with the double bedroom leading straight off it.
There’s an open-plan kitchen, outside braai area and covered stoep. All bedding and towels are provided and a bag of wood is complimentary per night.
Zara Cottage was built in the 1930’s and sleeps up to six in three bedrooms (king, twin and queen). The main bedroom comes with en suite bathroom. A shared bathroom services the remaining two bedrooms.
The kitchen and dining area is open-plan, with a Dover stove gracing the kitchen in true Karoo fashion.
The living room is self-contained and opens to a covered stoep and built-in braai. The cottage has been decorated in a Karoo Art Deco style.
There is plenty outdoor shaded area, a pit and portable braai. A complimentary bag of wood per night and all bedding/towels provided.

A beautiful, peaceful place. The cottages are really comfortable, with everything you need. There are lots of great walks from your front door. The Touwsberg Private Game and Nature Reserve is right across the road. Entrance is free and from our experience you’re likely to see some giraffes! The hosts are lovely and helpful, they made sure we had everything we needed to have a great stay. We will definitely be going back again.

I have not stayed as yet, as I was on a whirlwind trip to buy a property. I left late from Simonstown, arriving in Vanwyksdorp (where I was viewing property) after 7 pm, so stayed the night there. My Wolverfontein hostess very graciously allowed me to postpone my stay until 2 weeks later on 5th and 6th June. Our communication has been so warm and friendly, that I have no doubt that I will be a frequently returning guests as will my friends and my pets.
We had a very snug stay in D'Waenhuis during a freezing week in July. Two kids slept on a sleeper couch in the lounge, but the cottage was very spacious and we weren't cramped at all. Ashley and Andre provided plenty of wood to keep the fire going through the sub-zero evenings, and came past to tell us where the giraffes had been spotted at the neighbouring game reserve in the morning. Altogether a very comfortable stay in a beautiful area, with attentive and helpful hosts. Highly recommended!
