Riebeek Kasteel is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, situated 75 km from Cape Town in The Riebeek Valley together with its sister town Riebeek West. In 1661 Commander Jan van Riebeeck initiated an inland discovery expedition under the leadership of Pieter Cruythoff. They set off in the direction of Paardeberg and on 3 February 1661 they ascended a lonely mountain and came upon the fertile vista of the Riebeek Valley. They named it Riebeek Kasteel, in honour of the Commander. In the 19th century, both Jan Smuts and Daniel Malan were born in the outskirts later both becoming prime ministers of the country. Subsequently, farmers established themselves in the valley and during 1900 the town was laid out in and around its existing church and its neighbour The Royal Hotel, the oldest hotel in South Africa. The town eventually developed and today it houses more or less 2700 residents including some of South Africa's most famous painters attracted by the picturesque surroundings of the valley and is Riebeek Kasteel especially popular for its esthetical beauty and rural atmosphere. The town also serves as a satellite, a residential settlement for Paarl, Malmesbury and even the Metropole area. Often Riebeek Kasteel is referred to as “the best-kept secret of the Western Cape.”

A pond, low in nutrients, is a healthy environment for wildlife. An organic pool is teeming with life. If an alien micro-organism, a human pathogen for instance, enters the water, it faces battalions of hungry pond-dwelling micro-organisms to either starve it out of existence or devour it. A water analysis of this pond water showed that it contained zero organisms of e coli. per litre of water

Fantastic, wonderful stay. Accommodation in an age old Victorian manor home. We loved our stay
Friendly staff and a very nice place to rest and enjoy yourself and excellent service.
Our room was really big, we enjoyed the layout as it was spacious. the staff were friendly, helpful and we enjoyed the breakfast
Lovely old building, showing signs of gentle aging, beautiful old furniture, but good quality fittings ie linen where it matters. Friendly service, 2 interesting locals for conversation in the pub, (I suppose not available every night) and very pleasant well trained dog. Good value for money. Fire in pub for comfortable dining even at breakfast. And my request for not sweetened food was accommodated with good suggestions
