Welcome to Avondrust Guest House,
Cradled in a loop of the Sundays River, the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet is home to some 200 national monuments. Around every corner a piece of history is revealed to the visitor. And it is here, in the centre of town, that Merino sheep farmer and breeder, Jan Stephanus Minnaar, built his dream house during 1911.
Avondrust (“evening rest”) was to be his retirement home. He lived here with his wife, Maria Magdalena Smuts, “Ouma Smuts”. After he passed away, his daughter, Cora Lückhoff inherited Avondrust. Cora did not want to live in the house and sold it to her brother, Eduard Smuts (Eddie) Minnaar. After his and his wife’s death, Cyril Minnaar bought Avondrust from the estate. His grandfather was Jan Minnaar’s brother.

Reviews
Very comfortable and enjoyable stay. Centrally situated.
After a long day traveling we were happy to arrive at our accommodation. Our hostess was friendly and helpful. As it is was hot we changed and went for a cool off in their pool. The size of the rooms are good, luggage is easily accommodated for opening and unpacking. Our room had two comfortable couches to watch tv, the bathroom has both a bath and a shower with plenty of space. Restaurants are either next door or in the same block. Beautiful gardens with the main house being from 1911. They do have off street parking but only a few so book a parking when booking.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful guest house and can highly recommend Avondrust, either for a restful overnight stay or a longer stay in picturesque Graaff-Reinet. We were allocated a spacious family unit in the garden with a stoep with a view of the lovely garden. Our back door opened on to the pool area where a sparkling pool awaited. We did not really use the kitchen much but it was big and seemed well appointed. We were travelling with a teenager and a young adult and appreciated the ample space this unit had to offer. The WiFi and charging station built into the desk was an added bonus. We also loved the bathroom. Although we shared the bedroom, the huge bathroom with big bath, separate shower (with huge shower head) as well as separate toilet ensured privacy. We had safe parking for our packed car. This establishment is excellent value for money and within walking distance of everything. We had a good halfway rest and will return.
This must be the place Graaf Reinet has been build around! Beautiful buildings (1911) rooms, gardens and staff. It was great staying here - thank you! It is very close to some great eateries and shops to spend your time (and money) in.
The pretty main building of Avondrust guesthouse is a historical house from 1911, where they also serve the breakfast in a beautiful parlor. Our room was in a neighbouring building with direct access into the well-kept garden. The quadruple room with kitchenette offers enough space for a family and consequently more than enough for 2 persons. The house and parking lot is secured with a gate. We felt very well in these beautiful surroundings. There are nice bars and restaurants within walking distance.
Perfect location for wandering around this historic little town. The house is just beautiful with so many lovely touches. We were greeted so warmly & made to feel right at home. Our room was so pretty, large & airy with its own little balcony. Excellent breakfast & there is nothing not to love about this little gem.
My husband and I returned to this very special place after 11 years. Avondrust is even more beautiful and incredibly well run by owner Nico and team.
The Family unit was well set up, comfortable, and more than enough space for a busy family of 5! On our doorstep was the communal swimming pool.
Wherever you go you’re met with quaint and charming additions to the well-maintained garden, including all the little seating areas and benches.
Breakfasts are hearty, delicious, and excellent value for money - for R100 (about 8$ USD) there is bottomless coffee, fruit, yoghurt, toast, cereals, and a hot breakfast of your choice.
On the doorstep is the Camdeboo National Park where you can take the in the incredible sights of the Valley of Desolation.
Restaurants are within walking distance.
Staying at Avondrust is an absolute MUST!
A well appointed and comfortable Guest House in this historic town. Everything in walking distance including many restaurants such as Polka in the same street. Friendly host Nico with helpful information about the area. The sort of place you will be happy to return to.
This is a haven of tranquility in the middle of town. The gardens are a delight with many novel water features and a very wide range of bird life. The rooms are very pleasant and clean and the owner Nico is very attentive, there is an excellent swimming pool with views of the mountains surrounding Desolation valley, a place that must be visited. Also an excellent breakfast is provided.
We were welcomed by the very friendly Hester who took us to our garden rooms. This place has a beautiful garden. The rooms are clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was good. It is also centrally situated making it easy to take a walk to all places of interest in this historic town.
