Set in the tranquil farmlands of Balfour, Mpumalanga, just an hour's drive from Johannesburg, lies the magnificently restored Welgelegen Manor designed by South Africa's iconic architect, Sir Herbert Baker in 1913. This is the ideal getaway for a country-house weekend, a small conference, or an intimate garden wedding.
A sense of peace and tranquility greets you on arrival, echoing through the reception rooms with original fireplaces for cold winter nights, and spacious, luxury guest suites where every comfort is catered for. Beautifully appointed, the suites have been designed to enhance the style and elegance of yesteryear.
If you're not soaking up the sun next to the large, sparkling pool or having a drink in our cosy bar, have a game of billiards or board games in our games room. For the book worm, the "Ladies Lounge" or our secluded courtyard is ideal to enjoy your own company with a good book and a cup of tea with home baked treats.
Welgelegen is renowned for its wine cellar with a host of fine vintage wines. Select yours to enjoy with the fine dining experience offered. Our room rate includes bed and breakfast, as well as dinner throughout your stay.
In Room Facilities:Suites 1-4 in the Manor House all have log fireplaces. Suites 5-8 in the two wings have air-conditioning and gas heaters.

Welgelegen is set in the south western part of Mpumalanga which is affectionately called Cosmos Country. This region is characterised by the open grasslands with less than ten percent woody plant cover and millions of wild Cosmos flowers that grow here in the autumn months. Many artists travel to these parts to capture the wonderful marshmallow coloured wild flowers that are scattered in the long yellow grass.
The small towns in this area supply some of the finest dairy products in the country and the best way to experience the farming communities is to stop at the various farmstalls or 'padstalls' that are scattered next to the main roads.
Located south east of Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, just off the R23 that leaves the N3 north of Heidelberg and heads into the province of Mpumalanga, Balfour nestles in a region given over mostly to farms, game farms and bushveld.
