Kamberg Valley Hideaway provides luxury, self-catering accommodation in the Drakensberg, on a 27-hectare smallholding in the beautiful and tranquil setting of Kamberg Valley, located in the South Central Drakensberg.

Awake from your self catering cottage to enjoy a view of the clear, sparkling waters of Spurwing Dam (our fly fishing dam), surrounded by the varied green meadows of the local farmland and set against a backdrop of the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains.

Kamberg Valley is located in the Southern area of the Central Drakensberg, not far from Nottingham Road and the Midlands Meander and between the two well known Nature Reserves of Kamberg Nature Reserve and Highmoor Nature Reserve. Giants Castle is only a 40 minute drive away, so a great option for a day trip. The scenery surrounding this area is spectacular!

As well as our luxury self-catering accommodation, there are an abundance of activities for our guests to enjoy at Kamberg Valley Hideaway, in the South Central Drakensberg, such as fly fishing, photography, birding, walks and hikes, and nearby mountain biking, golf and quad biking and of course, the well known Midlands Meander route.

Alternatively, if you are just looking for a breakaway to relax, our self catering accommodation is peaceful, tranquil and idyllic.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge / freezer, gas hob, electric oven and microwave. All cutlery and crockery are also provided.

The kitchen is open plan to the living and dining areas which also have sliding doors on to you own private patio / braai area with stunning mountain views.

The outside patio / braai area contains an outdoor table and chairs plus a weber braai and gorgeous views of the mountains.

* Forest Cottage
Forest Cottage is a stand alone, 3-bedroom self catering cottage.

The cottage contains 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has a large and spacious ensuite bathroom which includes a separate shower and oval bath, so you can totally relax during your stay at Kamberg Valley Hideaway.

The other two bedrooms share a bathroom with large shower. All rooms can either be made up with a king size bed or two single beds. All linen and towels are provided, as are electric blankets for those colder, winter nights.

The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven, gas stove, microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. All cutlery and crockery are also provided.

The kitchen opens in to an open plan living area with a fabulous freestanding log fireplace and sliding doors that open on to a private patio and braai area. The patio also provides spectacular views of the dam and the mountain behind.

Our 27-hectare smallholding has two dams and a river running through it. The smaller of the two dams is a feeder dam to our main dam. The reeds on this dam are home to a multitude of different bird species.

Our larger dam is stocked with rainbow trout and has also seen bass arrive, so guests are welcome to try their luck fly-fishing, or spinning here.

Guests can also enjoy exploring the hikes in Kamberg Nature Reserve and Highmoor Nature Reserve, as well as Giants Castle, or even taking off on their mountain bikes along many of the MTB trails in the area.

Alternatively, we have a wooden deck where guests can simply enjoy a sun-downer whilst taking in the spectacular views of the Drakensberg Mountains.

The Mkhomazi Wilderness area covers 54,000 hectares and forms the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains. This Wilderness area is bordered by Giants Castle, in the Central Drakensberg, to the north and Cobham in the Southern Drakensberg, to the south.

It is arguably not as well-known as the Central and Northern parts of the Drakensberg Mountains and is therefore the least conventionally ‘touristy’ stretch of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg.

The Mkhomazi Wilderness area of the Drakensberg, sometimes referred to as “Little Berg”, is characterized by soaring buttresses with peaks reaching over 3000m that dominate the escarpment, deep valleys and high altitude wetlands. The scenery is ruggedly beautiful and is probably the best part of the Drakensberg for spotting wildlife, such as eland, reedbuck and baboons, to name but a few species. The area supports a huge array of rare endemic and endangered plant species and is rich in incredible bird life.

The Mkhomazi Wilderness Area incorporates two separate Nature Reserves, Highmoor Nature Reserve and Kamberg Nature Reserve. Both of these reserves have a number of hikes, some of which can be done in a few hours and others which take much longer. Both Nature Reserves also have stocked trout dams, so this part of the Drakensberg Mountains is renowned not only for its hikes, walks and scenic beauty, but also for its fly-fishing dams.

The nearest town to the Mkhomazi Wilderness Area is Nottingham Road, on the Midlands Meander, approximately 35kms away. The area between the Drakensberg Mountains and Nottingham Road has traditionally been a large farming community and as you drive the route towards the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains, large dairy farms, cows and tractors are visibly present, as are many glistening fresh-water dams and rivers.

I have just returned to the UK after holidaying in South Africa. One of the hi lites was spending time at the Kamberg valley Hideway. What a memorable experience it was and one that will stay with me for years to come. Our accommodation was superb, spotless and well equipped with the most amazing views plus a well stocked rainbow trout lake that entices fishermen and birds alike. A big thank you to our host Michelle your hospitality was outstanding.
