Swellendam owes its original development and existence to the relationships that existed between the Khoi people who supported and bartered with the Trekboers and the Ambagswerf at the Drostdy Museum was built to demonstrate the trades and skills that Swellendam was renowned for.
In the mid-19th century, the little hamlet of Malgas once played a much bigger role in the Overberg than it does today. Because the Breede is navigable for around 50km inland to Malgas, this was once an important trading port that served the whole area. From around 1860 onwards it was quicker to transport goods from Cape Town by ship than by ox wagon, and so this river route was a lifeline for the region.
The Sugar Bridge at Buffeljagsrivier, the Trading Post in Suurbraak, the mercantile background which was the foundation of both Barrydale and Infanta, and the important position of Stormsvlei as a refreshment post for the pioneering Trekboers as they carved out new lives for themselves, all of these bear testament to the history of South Africa as it developed through trade and commerce.
Property Facilities:* Built-in braai on verandah.
* Wireless internet access.
2 Picnic areas at the top of the farm and one by the middle dam with stunning sunset views.
We also provide game drives and picnic baskets at a cost.
For a small fee, you're welcome to come down to our organic garden and collect some fresh vegetables that might be in season. it's a simple garden, but you'll enjoy it. Enquire also at the farm for fresh farm eggs.
Giraffe, Sable, Bontebok, Springbok, Eland, Kudu, Water buck, scrub hare, dassies, Blue and Golden Wildebeest, and water mongoose. Numerous bird species including fish eagle, Stanley´s bustard, secretary birds, and our beautiful national bird, the blue crane. Fishermen beware. We found large amounts of Tilapia and bass in our dam recently. Bring your fishing rods and enjoy the fishing. Catch and release fishing only.
If you do come with small children, you're more than welcome to bring them down in the morning to help feed our farm animals and remember to bring an apple for Mister Finley, the Star farm horse, he will not leave you alone till he gets one.

We had very quiet and comfortable stay at teh farm looking on giraffes in the window... Everything is fine.
It was great!
It was great!
An Absolute wonderful experience. The right place to recharge your body and soul. A place to rest and again realize the Greatness of God.
We saw all the wild from nearby and please do not forget the apples Master Finley will not forgive you.
Thank you very much. I enjoyed every second.
Peaceful and tranquil. Walking amongst the wildlife and being able to observe them up close is truly a privilege. Our host was very attentive and helpful and the cottage in which we stayed was neat and comfortable.
We rented the Reebok cottage at Kwetu, myself and husband and two sons aged 6 and 11.
Right from the start everything was perfect. Communication was adequate and correct, the cottage was a great size and had all amenities required, including the outside fire which the children loved toasting marshmallows on. The wandering giraffes, ostriches, bucks and bucks etc were a delight, the property is big enough for children to run around but in a safe environment.
Overall a very relaxing and memorable stay.
I would highly recommend Kwetu on your itinerary.
Our stay was awesome. Thank you.
Loved our stay at Kwetu Farm. So quiet & peaceful & the animals are just amazing. It’s just lovely being right amongst it (even staying in the little house outside the farm - the only divide was a wooden fence). Would definitely recommend it.
Lovely clean and comfortable cottage in a very picturesque setting.
We had an excellent weekend stay. The place is beautiful, clean and the atmosphere was awesome. The animals was the main attraction and the highlight. Our host was very friendly and helpful.
