The historic village of Swinburne has been converted into accommodation, comprising of single, double and family rooms as well as self-catering units, making use of the existing buildings to create a uniquely formatted country-style Inn.

*Hound and Hare Pub and Restaurant - The Hound and Hare Pub and Restaurant resides in the old Swinburne Store, originally built in 1909.
Fully licensed, boasting Ice-Cold Beers, a Hearty Home-Style A-La-Carte Menu, Daily Pub Specials and All-Day-Breakfast, make the Hound and Hare a much-loved favourite for locals, guests and commuters alike. Featured in "SA's 100 Best-Loved Pubs". Dietary requirements can be met as per your needs when arranged prior to arrival. The Hound and Hare also cater for functions.

There are two outdoor loops on the property which make for great walking, especially for your little ones both human and canine. Choose either a 1,5km or 600m loop, both are easy-going with some steady inclines and offer some great views of the adjacent area and also offer great opportunities of sunrise/sunset viewings.

In Room Facilities:

There are 8 Single/Double Rooms - ground level and have a double bed and en-suite bathroom with tea/coffee facilities. 6 rooms have showers and heating, 2 rooms have baths and fireplaces.

There are 4 family rooms available on site. All rooms sleep 4 and have a bathroom and kitchenette with tea/coffee facilities, microwave and fridge.
3 rooms are on the ground level and have showers. 1 room has a loft with a bath. (Not suitable for small children or pensioners).

There are 2 fully self-catering units available on site. Both units have a kitchen, bathroom and lounge with a fireplace and TV. 1 unit has 2 rooms, sleeps 5 and is on the ground level. 1 unit has 2 double rooms and a basic loft with 3 beds.

Area Information:

Mountain Biking:
The walking loops on the property can be used for cycling as well as the railway service road which is about a 35km roundtrip to Harrismith and back. There is also a couple of gravel roads that can be used as cycling routes.

Birding:
Birds can be spotted anywhere on the property. The most commonly spotted birds are the Common Fiscal, Cape Robin-Chat, Bokmakierie, Crested and Black-collared Barbet, Cape Sparrow, Red-Wing, Pied and Cape Glossy Starling, Speckled Mousebird, Cape, Southern Masked and Village Weavers, African Hoopoe, Cape White-eye, Amethyst and Malachite Sunbird, Black Shouldered Kite, Jackal Buzzard, Long Crested Eagle, African Harrier Hawk, Secretary Bird and Cape Vulture.

Fishing:
A portion of the property is situated along The Wilge River, one of the main feeds to the Vaaldam in Gauteng. The river boasts Largemouth Yellowfish, Carp, Mudfish, Barbel and occasionally Largemouth Bass, which means Fly-Fishing and Bank Angling are the way to go. Although perennial, the river is highly seasonal and prone to various natural factors such as flooding and droughts. This means that the river can go through extended stages of either fast-flowing muddy water to calm, clear and stagnant water. The depth of the river can therefore change from an average of 1m to 3m at any given time. The riverbank is naturally wild and makes for a great adventure regardless of the outcome.

This was such a pleasant surprise. The rooms could do with a bit of upgrading but the comfort and cleanliness was exceptional. The hostess - unfortunately I didn't get her name, was superb. She was pleasant and very accommodating. The biggest surprise was the excellent food we enjoyed at the restaurant. The cozy atmosphere with the fire and the mouth watering food made the stay even more pleasurable. I will recommend this to everyone travelling down.

We booked at the last minute as our travel plans changed due to Gauteng lockdown, which happened while we were en route to Kruger via Gauteng. We picked Harrismith as a nice mid way point between Colesberg and Kruger.
The hosts were super friendly, the room was nice and clean and we had all we needed. Thank you!

We didn't go in to Harrismith. We usually stop at the Engen 1 Stop on our way to the coast.
