Only 34 kilometres from Swellendam in the direction of Malgas/Infanta, Melk Houte Bosch Guest Farm has something truly unique to offer.
It's a working farm with donkeys, cattle, and sheep. With brilliant fields of wheat, barley, and canola with a few Springbuck, Eland and Zebra grazing peacefully nearby, it is as majestic as you could imagine.
The accommodation at Melk Houte Bosch Guest Farm is sleek and contemporary despite its nod to the countryside. Your every need will be met by The Farmhouse and The Manor House, the two choices from which to pick.
The most amazing thing about the farm is the many kinds of birds and how much untouched greenery there is. Waking up in the morning is like plugging into nature’s most musical soundtrack, exquisite and a startling reminder of what life sounds like outside of cities.
Activities include rowing (we have two canoes) and fishing on the Breede River – 2km away and accessible by high clearance vehicle, birdwatching for the twitchers or enjoy the hiking and cycling routes.
Both our houses are equipped with a gas stove and inverter, so loadshedding will not affect you.
Melk Houte Bosch Guest Farm is the perfect place for you to spend a weekend or vacation if you want a cosy stay surrounded by nature.

A truly lovely little spot, literally in the middle of nowhere! If you are looking for peace and quiet, where the only noises to hear are those of the sheep and cows on the farm then this is the place for you. 35 mins out of Swellendam, on un-tarred roads, you eventually reach Melk Houte Bosch farm, Sonja met us there and then we drove a further 5 mins to reach the farm house. A bottle of wine and chocolates were left for us, alongside tea, coffee and sugar, with some yummy rusks to boot!
Sonja kindly left us a travel cot and bedding in case we hadn't brought for our 2 year old, such a lovely thought, she had even left some baby wipes :-)
There is another farmhouse close by, which is rented out by a lovely family and their dogs...they just had puppies so my children were ecstatic to have puppy cuddles! other than this family you are left to enjoy the silence.
Sonja was a great host, nothing was too much trouble and as a fairly new host she asked us to please be honest if there were things that would have made our stay better. We've left our suggestions such as providing heaters for colder nights, some basic condiments salt/pepper etc. Other than these small things our stay was perfect!
One point to make, it does state on Afristay that the farm is in Swellendam - it isn't, the drive from Cape Town to Melke Houte Bosch Farm took us over 3 hours and was much further than we initially wanted - it's a good 35-40 mins from Swellendam, so make sure you stop and grab coffee and supplies before reaching the farm, or its a bit of a drive back out.
All in all a truly lovely stay and if we ever want some farm life near Swellendam again, we'd be sure to call Sonja before anyone else.
