Area Information:The Eastern Free State town of Fouriesburg is in the scenic Brandwater Basin, surrounded by the Maluti, Rooiberg and Witteberg mountain ranges, on the border of Lesotho.
Fouriesburg is named after Christoffel Fourie, on whose farm, Groenfontein, it was established in 1892. During the Anglo Boer War, it was declared the capital of the Orange Free State Republic – a proclamation yet to be rescinded!
With a primarily agricultural economy – wheat, cherries, asparagus, sunflowers, beans and mielies – it also offers unique scenic beauty, activities for nature and adventure enthusiasts, arts and crafts, places of historical and architectural interest, and small-town hospitality.
A quieter alternative to the bustling village of Clarens (just 35km away), Fouriesburg is a comfortable commuting distance from three of South Africa’s major urban centres: Johannesburg (350km), Durban (400km) and Bloemfontein (250km).

Everything was excellent!!!
Excellent stay, very welcoming, comfortable and relaxing exactly what we needed. All the little extras makes it very special. Views are immaculate. Great to play with the dogs and roam around the farm. The hosts are very friendly and engaging with information about the area..
Absolutely magical. Carol and her family (including the hounds and horses) were incredibly welcoming. It felt like home away from home and the perfect place to unwind. My family and I will definitely be making Blackwoods a holiday destination

We had a relaxing time.
Fantastic stay at Blackwoods. Wake up to a rooster’s call! The attention to detail was amazing. Carol and Charlie treated us as guests of honour. We will definitely be back. The farm is a gem.
Sit back and relax, that pretty much sums up the beautiful location of Blackwoods. The cottage is really well equipped with all the essentials and much much more than traditionally found at self catering accommodation. The farm has an amazing setting with the backdrop of beautiful mountains which remind you of the Golden Gate mountain range. The friendly horses and cute pot-belly pigs really let you embrace the farm style holiday.
We spent an amazing few days at the farm. I can't say enough about how tranquil and lovely the cottage and farm is. The cottage itself is elegantly decorated and has all the facilities one could need. We were extremely comfortable there and lacked nothing during the stay. The hosts are warm and genuine people and made us feel right at home. Blackwoods is a must and I would highly recommend it as a place to recharge your batteries away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
