Bucklands is about 47 km from the pleasant Karoo town of Steytlerville. If you are looking for “a road less travelled” this is it!
Early pioneers and hunters who came up from the Cape in their wagons frequented this historical region, which forms the southern reaches of the Plains of Camdeboo. They came in search of a new life and “white gold” – ivory. They established farms in the valley flanked by the Baviaans and Grootrivier Hoogte that you can visit today.
The climate is typically Karoo – dry and healthy with hot days and cold nights. Activities include bird watching, game drives, and overnight camps. Explore age-old Bushman (Bushmen) paintings, scenic walks, horse riding and mountain bike routes.
Bucklands is situated at the head of Grootrivierspoort. Unforgettable trails and walks down the “poort” amongst yellowwoods, cycads, swimming holes and picnic spots. Bushman (Bushmen) caves and paintings and a fossil reef said to be 300 million years old!
Accommodation in “Die Poortjie”, a renovated cottage near the farmstead, which has two double bedrooms, a cosy stoep and braai lapa. Also “Die Ouwerwe”, a genuine inn on the old Port Elizabeth to Cape Town wagon road. It sleeps 12 in 4 bedrooms.Bird and game are abundant.

We had a wonderful time. Our host was clear on the directions and vehicle requirements, which is important in such a remote location.
Lovely stay, very tranquil, personal preparation for our specific group, and you have access to a beautiful piece of land to explore!
Quite rustic, but host was very accommodating and went out of his way to make our stay comfortable.
My son Nicholas and his friend JJ had a very nice stay. The hosts are very friendly and helpful, and
the boys will gladly stay there again on their next motorbike trip.
