Some say Kululapa is "off the beaten track" - we say "on the indigenous trail". 40 km above HOWICK KZN, beyond the Karkloof hills, our piece of the afromontane forest starts right from where you PARK your vehicle and WALK 550mtrs+, down, thru’ indigenous forest, surrounded by birds sounds, monkey ropes, fauna and flora, butterflies, tiny wild flowers and the rippling sound of the fountain stream.
This is a Twitchers & Birder’s delight. Savour the peace surrounded by the birdsongs of over 100 species - Striped + Buff-Spotted Flufftail, Orange Ground Thrush, Barretts Warbler, Mountain Wagtail, Eagles - Fish/Crowned/Long-Crested, the Narina Trogon, Black-Backed Puffback, Chorister Robin, the flash of red as the Lourie glides by, Wood & Barn Owls, Sunbirds x 5, Twinspot and at very rare times the Cape Parrot flying over with their noisy squalk and haphazard flight.
Hiking, adrenaline induced mountain biking or memories that take you back in a child-friendly, fantasy world of barefoot running, butterflies, frogs and imagination unlimited. Chill with a good book or cuddle around a roaring log-fire, as the evening mist rolls in. Spend an hour, or a day, along a cool mountain stream. Courage and adventure mingle as you dive under the vibrant massaging waters of Hippo-hollow waterfall, where children can play in the shallow water (our swimming pool), build a dam wall, picnic on the banks or send stick boats swirling on to their own adventures where, if you could follow, you would see it shoot over the thundering 'Jumpfalls’ past the banks of arums, clivia & pincushions surrounded by ferns galore or moss ladened rocks heading on to who knows where. Converse with the shy and elusive Samango apes that come out to sun themselves. At night jackals hunting in the distance, the strange scream of a Tree Dassie (Hyrax) and the hoot of owls.
If your hiking legs and knees work - this is the place for the ‘indigenous trail explorers', it is an ideal spot for an outdoor group or the lone adventurer and solace-seekers, to large family groups or small camps - stargazers, backpackers, cyclists, bikers welcome. Network with the connecting force of family and friends, to declutter and refocus. Ideal for birthdays, reunions, photo shoots. Hike, mountain bike the trails of yesteryear. Relax with space to breath, tranquil views, cool flowing streams, and shaded forest walks. Drink the pure fresh fountain water .
Comfortable, adequately equipped, self-catering accommodation is available. A cottage for 2-4 (Birdsong) and a bunkbed style country house (The Lapa), with open plan downstairs and three bedrooms upstairs (15) beds and room to overflow onto mattresses in the upstairs beanbag area. This is the place for muddy walking boots or ‘takkies’, mountain bikes and back packs - suntan cream and warm jackets all in one day.
In the surrounding areas, birding sites and hides, zip line tours, botanical gardens, hot-air ballooning and a farmers market are available.

Howick Reviews
Lovely peaceful area
Black Olive for lunch on Sunday.
Unfortunately with the hard lockdown we were unable to try restaurants and pubs. So I would like to reserve my comments for a later stage.
Still want to go to the Howick Falls, Midmar Dam and the Mooirivier Mideor. Need to spend more time in Howick.
Just travelled through, really.
View the falls and eat at the various restaurants in the town. Food was excellent.
Howick is very limited in what it offers... best to drive out to spots in the surrounding Midlands areas...
Midmar dam, Nelson Mandela capture site, stunning restaurants and shops.
Pleasant little country village to stop in and see the Howick falls.
We enjoyed our lunch at the Farmer's Daughter restaurant... dog friendly too.
