In Room Facilities:Bedrooms are spacious with a variety of double and single bed formations to choose from. Linen is provided with pillows and extra blankets for chilly winter evenings. Bathrooms are either full family with bath and shower or shower or bath only. Bath and beach towels are provided for guests. A washing machine, a dishwasher and a gas cooker are available in both Melkboom and Rots 'n See.
Area Information:Franskraal is about two hours’ drive from Cape Town and is a suburb of the fishing village of Gansbaai in the Overberg.
Gansbaai is famous for the Marine 5 and that is due to a small island and outcrop about 5 km offshore. Dyer Island and Geyser Rock is a conservation area and home of the threatened Jackass Penguin, thousands of cormorants and the Cape Fur Seal. White Sharks prefer “Shark Alley” between the two islands to feed on the seals.
Gansbaai has a vibrant marine industry based around the harbour with a fleet of trawlers, subsistence fishermen, a fish factory and abalone farms. The area is equally popular for recreational fishing and has many local recreational beach and offshore fishing enthusiasts.
The budding wine industry in the Elim area on the doorstep of Gansbaai is worth a visit. Interesting nearby small towns can be explored on a circular route through Stanford, Napier, Struisbaai, Elim and Baardskeerdersbos.
KORMORANT APARTMENT (Seaview Drive 57): Bachelor style accommodation with double bed in living room, fully equipped kitchenette and separate bathroom. Sea view and free Wi-Fi.
ROTS ‘N SEE SELF-CATERING VILLA (Seaview Drive 47): Five bedrooms and four full or partial bathrooms (3 en-suite). Open plan lounge and dining area with indoor patio and braai. Dream kitchen with all amenities - dish washer and washing machine. DSTV and free Wi-Fi. Panoramic sea view.
MELKBOOM SELF-CATERING VILLA (Seaview Drive 23): Six bedrooms and four full or partial bathrooms (2 en suite). Open plan lounge and dining area with an outdoor patio and braai under the Milkwood trees in the backyard. Fully equipped kitchen - dishwasher and washing machine. DSTV and free Wi-Fi. Panoramic sea view.
MARINE BIG 5: Gansbaai is one of the few places in the world to find sharks, whales, dolphins, seals and penguins together. Tours, boat-based diving trips, conservation activities and the penguin rehabilitation centre give intrepid visitor close encounters with these amazing marine animals.
THE FUNKY FYNBOS FESTIVAL, a country adventure in September is a highlight on the Gansbaai community calendar. Mountain bike races and run trails, fynbos displays, 4x4 drives, coastal garden festival, markets, fine food and wine and many more will keep the spirited visitor engaged for the weekend.
SEA HARVESTING: Beach and boat-based angling is popular amongst locals and visitors alike. For the less daring, buy fresh fish in the harbour or buy freshly baked fish from one of the local fish-and-chips shops. Gansbaai is famous for abalone farming and kelp harvesting. Savour abalone delicatessen in one of the local restaurants.
WINE AND CONSERVATION: Travel from Gansbaai over Elim to Bredasdorp and meander through the picturesque Strandveld where six Elim Winegrowers conquered the inhospitable but extraordinary terroir of Elim. Visit one of the farms to taste the premium quality wines. On the same road the unique Nuwejaars Wetlands Special Management Area that protects and rehabilitates the Agulhas Plain is open for visitors.
