Welcome to Die Gat Guest House.

Die Gat Guest House is a farmstead and historic monument, situated in the valley of Middelplaas ("the farm in the middle"), near De Rust. It has been in the hands of numerous generations of the Schoeman family since the early 1800s.

Characteristics of the old homestead, such as the paint of German origin on the interior walls of the "voorkamer" (lounge), the original architectural form of the house and the picturesque environment have ensured that many a South African film has been shot here. Supper is enjoyed with your host and hostess, Anton and Susan, in the "voorhuis" (dining room) or under the pergola and under the starry night skies. You will be treated on traditional "boerekos," regional dishes that Anton and Susan themselves prepare.

The guest rooms in the outbuildings, previously the school where the Schoeman children were educated, the cart-shed turned winepress, or even an ox wagon used by earlier generations, have been suitably furnished to give you a unique experience of the outdoors.

Uitstekende service, grote gastvrijheid van Susan en Anton, heerlijke maaltijden, prachtige tafeldecoratie, mooie tuin en rustige omgeving, eenvoudige maar nette kamers. We komen graag terug. Groeten Anne en André, Apeldoorn

We were a party of 2 couples in our 70s/80s, one couple returning after 14 years.

We loved the eccentricity of this place - an oasis of colour, coolth and charm. Wonderful supper (with the host) and breakfast.

Not good for wheelchair users; awkward for crutches.

Highly recommended.

Fantastic hospitality from Susan and Anton, Susan’s cooking was out of this world and Anton’s after diner chat and open discussion kept us all wide awake ! the whole concept of going into a time warp was absolutely wonderful.

The Karoo is a beautiful place. We visited THE TRAVELING TORTOISE for a weekend. We were welcomed by the owner, Jeff, who took us to our chalet. The chalet is very neat. Jeff showed us around and light our wood-fired hot tub.
I will recommend this trip for young and old. Our kids enjoyed the freedom of roaming around and the 'older' enjoyed the nature and quite.
