Splashy Fen offers accommodation on a farm that is home to the famous Splashy Fen music festival, just 18 km from Underberg. The Umzimude river which runs through the farm is heavenly for swimming in and picnicking next to. In the evenings, listen out for the howl of the jackals and the whistle of the reedbuck.

Accommodation is offered in a quirky and rustic exclusive-use log cabin and campsite

The site comprises a log cabin which is open on one side with 4 single beds; 2 each in 2 areas. Sheets and pillows are supplied and roller blinds can be lowered for privacy in each area. In addition, there is space to pitch several tents, allowing up 12 people in total to sleep at Mtingu Camp. Guests are required to bring along their own tents and equipment.

Hot water for the open-air shower is supplied by a wood-burning easily operated ‘donkey’ boiler and a separate long drop toilet and washbasin with cold running water.

There are also rustic work surfaces, benches, a sink, shelving and cold running water in the cabin. Hot water can be carried from the shower, which has a tap to fill a supplied bucket. The floor of the log cabin is covered with wood chips and therefore no open flame is allowed in this area. At the front of the cabin, there is an extension with a roof, benches, bare floor and small fire. In front of the cabin is a large outside fire pit with logs for sitting on.

The camp has been made as eco-friendly as possible. Most of the wood used comes from a sustainable source or is reclaimed and the water is fed from a crystal clear stream up in the hills. There is no electricity but 4 rechargeable light bulbs are supplied for the log cabin. There is also a hammock to sling up and take your book

Extra cost of R100 per pet per stay. Maximum of 2 pets

It's far enough away from all the hubub to really feel like you're away from it all but also has a lot available to do if you so wish. The scenery is beautiful and the air is fresh!

If you're in to adventure, then Underberg is the place to visit. There's no shortage of trails for running, hiking and mountain biking. It's close to the Drakensberg and Sani Pass.

Breath-taking beautiful! Well stocked convenience store (Elands Rest) and a few nice restaurants to have coffee. Just very cold, even in Nov.
