Area Information:The land that we now know as ‘!Khwa ttu’ was purchased in 1999. It was then registered under the name of Grootwater, a wheat and sheep producing farm consisting of a number of rather dilapidated farm buildings. The land covers over 850ha and is located in the vicinity of the Atlantic village of Yzerfontein. This is an area not commonly associated with the presence of the San, yet the region’s history reveals that this was once part of the vast territory inhabited for centuries by hunter-gatherers who were brutally persecuted by Boer commandos in the late 18th Century. In honour of our ancestors, the project was named ‘!Khwa ttu’, the term for ‘water-hole’ in the language of the now extinct |Xam San.
In designing !Khwa ttu, we wanted to take advantage of the land’s spectacular surroundings whilst creating a unique cultural experience for the visitor. !Khwa ttu is now based in several beautifully renovated old farmhouse buildings. Our San brothers and sisters from across the entire region of southern Africa participated in this task and were involved ‘hands-on’ throughout all aspects of the project. Throughout the planning and implementation process of the project we enjoyed and are still enjoying the assistance of professionals in the field of development, tourism, anthropology, archaeology and education.
!Khwa ttu’s environment with its vast openness, rocky outcrops, indigenous fynbos vegetation and a number of game species offers wonderful possibilities to enjoy nature and rest the soul and mind. Before !Khwa ttu was officially opened to the general public in March 2006, a great deal of work had to be undertaken to prepare the site for visitors and tourists.
A beautifully designed 60-seater restaurant.
A corporate function venue for groups of 10-30 delegates.
By booking our venue you will be assisting the San, a small group of survivors from the original tribe.
Attractions:Aside from the wildlife, a mountain bike trail on the Cape West Coast includes two well-marked routes suitable for all levels of experience, from casual leisure rider to experienced adrenaline junkie. On the 10km, circular green route you may have wonderful encounters with game and the highlight is a 20 metre drop down a granite rock face to a water hole – a safer option available! Fitter cyclists can continue on the circular red route for 20km of more challenging climbs on neighbouring farms.
The hilly red route winds past granite rocky outcrops, along wheat fields and up into the beautiful Ormonde vineyards above Darling. Those who make the collective 800m climb are rewarded with increasingly inspiring vistas of Table Mountain, Langebaan Lagoon and the rolling Darling hills. The icing on the cake is a fun, fast ride back to base for tasty Ormonde wine and !Khwa ttu’s signature Eland burger.
Single track, jeep track, farm roads, relaxed riding, technical sections, fast moving terrain, fun, beautiful scenery – the !Khwa ttu mountain bike route has it all. Combine that with fascinating San guided tours, gentle hiking trails, local wine, good food, comfortable accommodation, friendly smiles, warmth and professionalism, and its’ enough to draw you back to !Khwa ttu again and again.
With or without a bike !Khwa ttu takes you on an exciting journey of discovery into the world of Southern Africa`s San or Bushmen people. In a spectacular West Coast setting, a convenient one hour`s drive from Cape Town, experience a culture inspired by ancient knowledge and traditional folklore. Besides the San-guided walking tours !Khwa ttu presents delicious dishes, with award winning Ormonde wine and good coffee in a cosy restaurant. If you want to stay at !Khwa ttu for a few days there are luxury guest houses and tented bush camp to provide appealing accommodation. By combining adventure, relaxation and education !Khwa ttu will leave a lasting impression and a new understanding of the phrase “San Spirit Shared”.
