Keetmanshoop is a town in the Karas Region of southern Namibia, lying on the Trans-Namib Railway from Windhoek to Upington in South Africa. Keetmanshoop is the capital of the Karas Region in the south of Namibia and is a convenient stop-over en-route to Luderitz, the Fish River Canyon as well as the coast. Named after a German industrialist, Johann Keetman, the town has many things to do and see.
Surrounded by historical and natural attractions Keetmanshoop has unique buildings from the German period. A small museum is housed within an old Church where the history of Keetmanshoop is wonderfully illustrated and well worth a visit. The Tourism Information office is within the old “Kaiserliche Postamt” (Post Office) which was built in 1910.
Tourism is one of Namibia’s greatest income sources with the main tourist attraction at Keetmanshoop being the quiver forest trees. The name comes from the utilization of the trees’ branches by the San people as quivers for their arrows. The trees can reach an age of 300 years and have adapted to the harsh environmental conditions very well, storing water in their trunks.
