The National Arts Festival offers a wide programme over ten days, with literally hundreds of exhibitions and performances. The Arts Festival has become the premiere showcase for South African visual arts, music, theatre and dance.

As much a part of Makhanda as its defining architecture and festival buzz is the campus of Rhodes University.

Grahamstown Reviews

Zelnari Lourens
27 June 2023

The Old buildings, the stunning churches and Cathedral, the history and the National Arts Festial.
The roads are full of potholes, everything closes very early during the weekend.
During fest, the Long table is a very good place for dinner!

Grahamstown is a lovely town but the terrible potholes and lack of water in town is a huge problem for visitors and residents alike. My sons are students at Rhodes University and struggle immensely with the bad water supply and as they call it "water shedding" as they sometimes go up to three days days at a time without water

Beautiful old buildings to visit! The terrible streets full of potholes make this 5 star town unfortunately a 3 star place!
