Area Information:

Mariental, the administrative and commercial hub of Namibia’s Hardap Region, lies on the edge of the Kalahari Desert and has a rich history rooted in Nama heritage, originally named Zara-gaebia (“dusty”) by the Nama people of Khoi-Khoi descent. Renamed after Herman Brandt’s farm, "Marie’s Valley," it reflects the colonial era when Brandt purchased the land from Nama chief Hendrik Witbooi in 1890. A battleground between colonial and Nama forces from 1903 to 1907, Mariental grew with the advent of the railway in 1912 and achieved village status in 1920, marked by the construction of Namibia’s first Dutch Reformed Church. Today, the town thrives on ranching, irrigated farming of crops like wheat, lucerne, and grapes, and as Namibia’s centre for ostrich farming, supported by an abattoir for global export. Tourism flourishes with attractions like the Hardap Dam Resort for water sports and nearby lodges such as the Kalahari Anib Lodge and Bagatelle Kalahari Game Lodge, offering desert adventures. Balancing a blend of traditional and modern industries, Mariental is a vital hub in Namibia's southern region.
