Riebeek Kasteel is a charming, picturesque village in the Riebeek Valley, Western Cape, about 75 km northeast of Cape Town. Known for its historic charm, scenic beauty, and vibrant arts scene, it’s one of South Africa’s oldest towns, believed to have been established in the mid-1600s.
The area is famous for its excellent wines and olives. Many wine estates and olive farms are open to visitors, offering tastings and tours. Popular stops include Kloovenburg Wine & Olive Estate and Allesverloren Wine Estate, both renowned for their exceptional products.
Riebeek Kasteel has become a hub for artists and creatives. Visitors can explore art galleries, boutique shops, and quirky stores featuring local crafts and artwork.
The village boasts a variety of eateries, from farm-to-table bistros to fine dining restaurants. Favourites include The Royal Hotel, with its colonial charm, and Mama Cucina, an Italian-inspired eatery.
The town is named after Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch coloniser who established Cape Town in 1652. It is said that he passed through this valley during an expedition in the 1660s. Riebeek Kasteel retains its old-world charm, with heritage buildings and tree-lined streets adding to its appeal.

Nice restaurants!
Near to Cape Town
Lovely town for eating good food, meeting friendly people, relaxing and just chilling out
The oldest hotel in South Africa. Delicious meal at Pinata.
Beautiful village with interesting shops and places to eat

Nice artistic vibe.
the variety, the quality and quantity of restaurants, the views
Cafe Felix is lovely. We had dinner there. Wonderful atmosphere. The quiet of the town. At night you can "hear" the silence. Beautiful place.
The wonderful location, the views, the mountains and the local people. We met a fantastic artist call Piet Blom, and his wife Hester! His paintings are all about trees, and the complexity in his art is incredible!! We bumped into Mornè du Plessis, what a great man! And Roberto the Italian owner of Angies is a great host and looking after every patron personally.
For me the people, the unique town setup and the wine and nature and the simplicity of all makes it a great destination.
Beans about coffee!!
