The Cavern Resort & Spa, named after the infamous Cannibal Cavern, is nestled in the foothills of the Northern Drakensberg in the Amphitheatre World Heritage Site area. A place of captivating beauty, it is surrounded by majestic mountains, lush indigenous forests and clear ’berg streams.
Fondly known as ‘The Resort of Many Happy Returns’, The Cavern is a place where families bond, friendships are formed and memories are made. It is a special, tucked-away romantic getaway for couples, a gentle place to find quiet and solitude, as well as a safe and child-friendly resort with a range of fun activities for families.

The resort offers two types of comfortable accommodation – standard and superior. Standard rooms are set in landscaped gardens where a mix of vibrant indigenous plants attracts countless birds that fill the days with birdsong and the evenings with the sounds of crickets, frogs and other friendly creatures. Standard rooms have tea & coffee making facilities. There are no TVs in our standard rooms.
Our finely appointed superior suites overlook a beautiful ancient fern forest. Each has its own private patio where one can soak up the sun, listen to the forest streams and rejuvenate in the peace of our exquisite mountain wilderness. Superior rooms have a TV and bar fridge. Our superior suites have a fireplace too.

The Cavern is adjacent to the Royal Natal National Park and the Amphitheatre. This is a World Heritage site and should be included in your itinerary when planning holidays in the South African Drakensberg.
The Cavern is set in a secluded valley beneath the massive sandstone cliffs of the Northern Drakensberg. The thatch accommodation and facilities blend beautifully with the natural surroundings of the area. The Cavern is home to numerous Bushman paintings, 213 species of birds, 73 species of trees and numerous wild animals. As a nature lover, this would be your ideal location.

Our resort offers all sorts of activities. We have two daily guided hikes, fly-fishing and horse trails for the experienced and for the 'not-so-sure'. If you're keen on mountain biking, our trails will keep you busy for days. If you prefer taking it easy, our pool is the perfect place to relax with a book, a tray of tea or a cold beer. For those up for a challenge, there's tennis, lawn bowls and a pile of board games, such as scrabble, chess and backgammon.

We welcome children. There are pony rides, canoeing trips on the dam and safe, exciting playgrounds in a garden setting.

Our Forest Retreat Spa offers relaxing treatments and is a choice spot to unwind and restore in peaceful settings.

The resort offers daily guided hikes and horse rides. For the more energetic, walks are organised to the Tugela Gorge and to the top of the Amphitheatre. The Cavern is home to an extensive range of recreational facilities, from trout fishing to mountain bike trails. With a 9-hole golf course and Adventure Centre down the road, this is the perfect holiday destination in the Northern Drakensberg.
