Tunisia is a fantastic destination for anyone wanting to visit the north part of the African continent. A major tourist hot spot within the country is undoubtedly the spectacular seaside resort of Monastir. Located along the central shoreline of Tunisia and approximately 160km from the capital of Tunis, Monastir, which means ‘Monastery’ in French, is one of those towns that effortlessly and harmoniously combines the new age modernity that Tunisia now represents and the old-world feel that makes the country unique and special.

Monastir was founded on the ruins of an ancient Punic-Roman city and features a well-preserved Ribat that was used to scan the ocean for any threatening or hostile ships coming towards the marina. The Ribat remains one of the town’s most popular attractions and has even been featured in the movie ‘Monty Python’s The Life of Brian’. Another sought after place to visit is the monastery after which the town has been named. Built in 797 by an Islamic Order to defend Monastir against the advances of Byzantine warships and the threats of nomadic tribes, the monastery, today, is home to an impressive museum which has a collection of some of the most beautiful art and artifacts you will find anywhere in Tunisia.

Of course Monastir is primarily loved and visited because of its incredible beach culture and it features some of the bluest Mediterranean waters to be found anywhere. The marina, which is sheltered by the city’s ancient walls, becomes a lovely promenade where guests can take leisurely strolls and marvel at the magnificent scenery that surrounds them.
