The West African country of Senegal is one of the continent’s most popular and frequented destinations. As capital of the tourist hub of the Petite Côte, and 80km south of the capital city of Dakar, Mbour is traveller friendly offering a number of fine hotels and other accommodations to suit the budget of all its visitors.

Besides tourism, this seaside resort’s other major commercial industries are fishing and peanut processing, proving to be an important cog for the country’s economy. As Mbour is an important fishing port, it attracts keen anglers to its waters as they are filled with many types of fish including marlin, tuna, swordfish, barracuda, and even sharks. Mbour is also known for its festivals and celebrations in which a spiritual guide, installed early in the 19th Century, protects the young men getting circumcised and presides over the initiation ceremony. These proceedings are sacred to the local community as they espouse values and virtues of respect for the elders, courage, and humility to the young men, while being intriguing to outsiders who are curious about this age-old rite of passage; it can be witnessed between the months of mid-June to mid-September, with the actual circumcision ceremony taking place during August.

Because the Petite Côte region is the largest Catholic region in Senegal, there are a number of churches and chapels in to visit.
