Area Information:Underberg is a newly discovered jewel in the far west of Kwa Zulu-Natal. It is situated against the southern foothills of the Drakensberg. The berg and area was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. It enjoys special protection by the United Nations Conservation treaty. It is a high rainfall area and serves as a spurge to the rest of the Province. Many pollution free rivers cascade down the sides of the berg then along the Umkomaas, Umzimkulu Polele, Umzimvubu Rivers & further north to the Tugela.
There are several internationally important Bushman paintings sites which vary in age from 4000 years old to only 150 years old. Scenes of the first white settlers and the Nguni Settlers from East Africa are depicted in some paintings. Today the culture remains varied with an English, Afrikaans and Zulu population.
The area boasts two of the highest peaks in the Drakensberg, Hutchinson?s Peaks. The height of the south peaks, 3252 m, the north peak at 3258 m. These can be seen from a long distance away.
There are several smaller nature reserves within the uKhahlamba World Heritage Area- Cobham, Loteni and Vergelegen Reserves. They are administered by KZN Conservation Services.
In the village of Himeville is the location of one of the only few roosts of the Amur Falcons. (Previously called Eastern red footed Kestrel.) There are several thousands bird roosting here from September to March every year. They are migrants from Eastern Europe and will do the journey twice a year, a distance of 16 000 kms!! (Unfortunately aerial crop spraying affects these little falcons, several are poisoned every year).
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES -
FISHING:
We have 2.5km of rainbow trout inhabited river frontage. The rivers are open from 1st Sept to 31 May annually. Should the river conditions be unfavorable, there is a dam on our neighbouring farm (4km away). The dam is open for year round fishing enjoyment. There is free tuition for beginners. We also have a small bass dam which provides hours of fun for children. We keep a small selection of flies and lures for sale and rods to hire.
WALKING AND BIRDING :
There is a gentle walk along the river bank or longer 5km hike skirting Thrombosis gorge. We encourage visitors to add to our check list of over 100 birds. The more serious hiker can visit the Drakensberg conservation areas nearby where one can do trails of varying degrees of difficulty. There are several smaller nature reserves within the uKhahlamba World Heritage Area- Cobham, Loteni and Vergelegen Reserves. They are administered by KZN Conservation Services.
SWIMMING, BOATING, TUBING :
The Lodge is situated at the finish of the Drak Challenge canoe marathon and the start of the Thromi XFest, an extreme sports event. Canoes, paddles and tubes are available to hire. Tubing is a favorite summer activity.

In summer wild flowers splash the road margins with colour and in winter iced falls sparkle under brilliant skies.

Was awesome. The owners where so accommodating and even entertained my children one evening playing darts.
Thank u so much.
Amazing views, great hospitality! Clean and unique little touches. We had the best stay...wish it could have been longer. Will definitely be returning.
Fantastic & relaxing stay! Lynne, Stephen & the crew were amazing with their impeccable service. Keep up the good work folks!
Peaceful and serene setting which gave us the perfect getaway we were looking forward to. Amazing views and clean well kept cottages, amazing, friendly and helpful staff made our stay a memorable one.
We had a wonderful time at Umzimkhulu River Lodge in April/May 2019. Our cottage was neat, fully equipped and peaceful. The views from our private deck was wonderful. We will definitely be back!
What an amazing time we had at Umzimkulu River Lodge celebrating my sons 6th Birthday, I booked for 9 of us, 6 adults and 3 children, each and every one of us did not want to leave, and could easily have booked for longer. Thanks to Lynne and Steven for being such wonderful hosts, they were super friendly and helpful. Thank you again for a wonderful stay.
We stayed at Malachite Cottage. Cute well appointed and comfortable little cottage with a lovely view of the river and the mountain on the other side. Hosts Lynne and Steve very welcoming with a personal touch and sorted out all requests beforehand. Arrived in freezing cold and rain. But had a lovely fire in the lounge and electric blankets on the bed. Unfortunately we didn't take advantage of the restaurant as we had planned self catering and already had too much food. Next time will plan at least one meal in their lovely restaurant. I can imagine how beautiful it must be in summer. As even in the cold we had lovely walks along the river and saw interesting birds with one or two lifers which is good for out of season! Will be back.
Our stay at Umzimkulu River Lodge was awesome, thank you!

Amazing hospitality. Everything you need and more. Tasteful and comfortable. Loved feeding the animals. Beautiful outdoor area and scenery. Wallk down to the river.
Will definitely come back.
Mountain views and the breath of fresh air
It's far enough away from all the hubub to really feel like you're away from it all but also has a lot available to do if you so wish. The scenery is beautiful and the air is fresh!
Hiking, swimming, relaxing.
If you're in to adventure, then Underberg is the place to visit. There's no shortage of trails for running, hiking and mountain biking. It's close to the Drakensberg and Sani Pass.
Breath-taking beautiful! Well stocked convenience store (Elands Rest) and a few nice restaurants to have coffee. Just very cold, even in Nov.
Scenery in the surroundings.
For us its all about the hiking in the mountains.
Scenery!!
Beautiful part of the country!!
